General Course Information

Welcome to Ethics for Nerds! This page provides you with information about the course and what you need to do to succeed in it.

The dCMS

Everything will happen via the dCMS. The calendar is always kept up to date. All relevant course materials are added to the Materials section. Your personal status page provides you with the possibility to upload submissions, form groups, see feedback to submissions, and also later your grades. The forum (soon to come!) allows you to ask questions. The information tab in the menu bar holds relevant information, like this one.

Lecture Format

The course is an inverted classroom. You will have to prepare by reading the current chapter of the lecture script at home. The current lecture chapter can be found in the Materials section of the dcms. The “lectures” are not normal lectures, but classroom sessions that are a mix of discussions, exercises, exam-style questions, quizzes, and occasionally mini lectures. Attendence is recommended, but not mandatory. Nothing in the classroom session is graded.

Project (Exam Admission)

In order to get the exam admission, you will have to complete a project. During this project, you will simulate the work of an Ethical Review Board. More information about the project can be found in the Information section.
If you want to transfer the exam admission from a previous year, please write an email to Sarah.

Exams (Grading)

Everybody who has the exam admission can partake in one or both exams. You pass the course if and only if you pass at least one exam. The exams will determine your grade. In case that you take part in both of them, the better one counts. You can find the exam dates in the calendar.
You are allowed to take a DIN A4 cheat sheet to the exam. (So, learning things by heart is not necessary.) Past exams will be made available in time. If you do not want to wait that long: Sarah always submits her exams to the students’ council, where you can get them as well.

Summaries

You have the option to summarize the content of the current chapter, and you will then get all your summaries as print-outs during the exam. So, you have the possibility to bring even more notes than those that fit on your cheat sheet. More information about the summaries and the terms and conditions that apply can be found in the Information section

Forum

The forum is soon to come.
If you have any questions that might also be intersting for others (like those about the course content or about the general organization), please ask them in the forum, which you can find here. All other questions and issues (like those about personal or health related issues, or how to handle this one exceptional thing that only applies to you) are best handled through an email to Sarah.

Office Hours and Tutorials

There will be office hours and additional tutorials. The calendar will be updated with their dates soon.
